Explosive opener Virender Sehwag was on Tuesday ruled out of the Twenty20 World Cup with a shoulder injury, dealing a major blow to India’s title defence in the tournament.
Sehwag’s Delhi Daredevils teammate Dinesh Karthik will replace him in the tournament, the BCCI said in a statement.
Sehwag had sustained the injury during the Indian Premier League and missed the opening match against Bangladesh, which means he will return to India without playing a single match in the tournament.
In Sehwag’s absence, Rohit Sharma opened for India in the first match.
Sehwag may need a surgery to his injured shoulder and will return home after consulting medical experts here.
India play their next match against Ireland at Nottingham on Wednesday.
